I have the Sorenson Video 3 codec (which is supported by Episode) and it will not show up as an option inside episode. I can export using the codec in Squeeze just fine, but don't even have the option from inside episode.
Oddly enough, I tried installing Episode on another computer and the software recognizes the codec just fine! But it's our Assistants computer which it's not working on, and they will be the one using the software the most so I need to keep it installed on their computer. In other weird things happening with the program, the had a watch folder set up and the folder was renamed from within Finder. Now the watch folder can't be deleted from within in the list of Folders in Episode. An minor annoyance, but disappointed that I've run into two problems within the first day of having it installed. |

OS? Version of Quicktime? Episode 5.3?
Sorenson Video 3 is a Quicktime codec so you'd have to make sure in Quicktime that legacy codecs are displayed. Honestly though I can't think of a single reason one would use that codec for these days. Nearly all but old/slow computers can handle H.264 (MPEG-4 part 10) otherwise one might consider MPEG-4 (MPEG-4 Part 2). I can't trouble shoot the watch folder issue without some of the above details. ------------------------- CraigS Telestream Desktop Forum Moderator |

OS 10.5.8, QT 7.6.4, Episode 5.3
We have a client that prefers us to use the Sorenson codec over H264, so that should explain it. If we can get Episode to recognize the Sorenson codec I'd have no reason to use any software other than Episode for our compression. |

Legacy codecs may need to be activated in Quicktime itself. Quicktime itself no longer makes this available unless you enable it. Basically Apple's position is to not make it available by default. That itself should tell you the current state of that codec.
Quicktime Pref Pane - Advanced - Show Legacy Encoders And this doesn't exist in Snow Leopard at all. Personally I think you should speak to your client on why Sorenson codec is considered legacy. If they need an "older" codec, Mpeg 4 part 2 really would be the way to go. There's no reason I can think of to use Sorenson codec at all. ------------------------- CraigS Telestream Desktop Forum Moderator |

Amazing... that did it and now it's showing up in Episode! After checking our other machine which Sorenson worked on, "Show Legacy Encoders" was checked and that explains how it worked. Thanks a ton!
And the info about Snow Leopard is very interesting and good to know for when we eventually have to upgrade. Maybe that would be a good excuse to get the client to stop using Sorenson... but it's mainly a compatibility thing and knowing that the video plays on older machines from what I understand. |

MPEG4 (part 2) will play on older machines. There is NO REASON to use Sorenson. The result will be lower quality. You might have to go back to the version of Quicktime that came with OS9 or maybe OS8 so you're going back 10 years or more. Understand when it's defined as legacy and hidden it means that you should not use it . . . that there is no reason to use it . . . that use should be avoided.
